People on the move: an evangelizing opportunity

As the Catholic Church celebrates the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on January 15, 2012, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI covers the theme of “migrations and new evangelization”. He invites people of good will, especially Christians, to commit themselves to find solutions to the countless challenges that human mobility and protection of people’s human rights, their families, their culture, and their communities present.

The President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón opened the Third International Forum on Migration and Peace at the Secretariat of Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This year the focus of the discussion was "Safe International Migration."

Since time immemorial the link between violence and migration is a reality. Along with poverty, inequality, lack of social cohesion and natural disasters, violence is one of the main causes of the emigration of millions of people around the world, while in countries of destination, the simple presence of migrants causes tensions in the social fabric.


Former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Oscar Arias gave a lecture during the first session of the Third Forum on Migration and Peace in Mexico City.


Dr. Oscar Arias, after mentioning that migration is an issue of human development and, in many cases, caused by the lack of competitiveness of developing countries, presented a compelling analysis of the situation in Latin America and the main challenges it faces.


First day of the Third International Forum on Migration and Peace


The first day of the International Forum on Migration and Peace was divided into several discussion panels in which the executive and legislative branches, on one side, and the private sector, on the other, discussed the actions that should guide public policy on migration, the role of government and of the private sector and how the relationship between private sector and migration is a mutually beneficial relationship.
